ATHENS, Ga. - Jalen Carter's next step in his causes to preserve his status as a top prospect in next month's NFL conscription will be Georgia's pro day on March 15, where he is anticipated to participate in workouts in front of coaches and general managers.

Carter, a defensive tackle who played a big role in the Bulldogs' back-to-back state championships, has been widely projected as one of the top picks in the April 27 NFL conscription. His draft outlook was potentially clouded by misdemeanor charges of racing and reckless driving in relation to the Jan. 15 wreck that killed teammate Devin Willock and a Georgia recruiting staffer, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy.

Police allege in an arrest warrant that Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk alongside the 2021 Ford Expedition driven by LeCroy at the time of the wreck. Willock was a passenger in the SUV LeCroy was driving.

Police definite LeCroy's Expedition was traveling at about 104 mph (167 kph) shortly beforehand the crash. The arrest warrant says LeCroy's blood-alcohol concentration was .197 at the time of the break. The legal limit in Georgia is .08.

The break occurred just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their additional straight national championship with a parade and ceremony.

Carter tweeted a statement on Wednesday, saying he expects to be "fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing."

He is scheduled for arraignment in municipal law courtyard in Athens on April 18 after posting a $4,000 bond on the charges late Wednesday night. He then returned to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis for interviews with teams and measurements.

As he designed even before the legal problems, Carter only observed workouts at the combine.

Carter is not the only Georgia player facing charges of racing on republican roads. Linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson, the team's second-leading tackler in 2022, was arrested on Feb. 22 on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing. Dumas-Johnson is scheduled for arraignment on April 17.

Also, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was arrested in Dallas on Jan. 29 and charged with republican intoxication.

"It was a mistake," Bennett said Friday at the pair. "Everybody's aware of it, I know why they can't been. I talked to my coaches about it, I apologized to my tribe because that's who I felt worse about. I felt like I let them down."

Bennett labelled the recent legal problems by Georgia players as "individual mistakes."

"They're responsible for them, it's not the culture," Bennett said.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart told ESPN on Friday also said the arrests do not think a culture problem at Georgia.

"Absolutely not. I would say we're far from it," Smart said. "When you talk to country outside our program that come into it, they talk around what a great culture we do have -- and we do an amazing job. Because I've got a lot of outside entities that come into our program and pour into these young men.

"Do we have evil young men and women and players? Not necessarily. But I pledges you this, that's the intent: for us to grow these guys and get them better. And I feel really good about the culture within our program."

Smart said University of Georgia campus police and Athens-Clarke County Police had officers talk to Georgia players last summer around the dangers of street racing.

INDIANAPOLIS - Former Georgia star and NFL prospect Jalen Carter was predictable to be among the first five players picked in the 2023 NFL Draft, but those prospects could potentially be hurt by charges announced on Wednesday for reckless driving and racing.

The charges stem from a deadly Jan. 15 shatter which killed offensive lineman Devin Willock and one of the school's recruiters, and injured two others.

Carter, who was attending the NFL Scouting Combine this week, is now mild back to Athens to face those charges.

Some experts are not sure if original events will change his draft chances come this April.

"I don't believe overlook would be the case for any of these teams with Jalen Carter. I think it's going to be vetted very carefully and very seriously," ESPN analyst Field Yates told FOX 5's Miles Garrett.

NFL teams looking at the 21-year-old prospect will have to weigh the risk to the reward if they are interested.

"When you have an incident that is valuable and serious as this, it's another thing that a team, all teams are touching to have to dig in on, and decide how much risk does it incur, and what are the ramifications of this incident," Yates said.

Yates doesn't think Carter's outline stock will fall too far, but it all hinges on the results of the investigation and the outcome of those charges.

"I believe it's probably a reasonable expectation that it won't be too far once pick No. 1 overall. The further up the boards you are, the more valuable the investment both in terms of potential ability and also a monetary value," Yates said. "So, I believe teams will probably take a long, hard look at what this incident consuming, and whether this is reflective of the kind of intimates Jalen Carter is or if it's an isolated incident that unfortunately that was tied to something very tragic."

Nolan Smith, one of Carter's former teammates, commented on his picture prior to the announcement of charges.

"I just want to go and sure this up to y'all, JC is just misunderstood," said Nolan Smith. "He's probably one of my favorite teammates to play with. And he's one of those guys, I look to my left and nod my head and he already knows we are all on the same page, so I love pass rushing with him, just intimates around him in the locker room. He's just an fabulous friend."

Back in December, another draft analyst called out Carter for what he labelled as "character" issues.

Todd McShay issued the football domain a warning during an ESPN show:

"It's interesting with Carter. We all agree, it doesn't take a super scout to figure out that he's a phenomenal player in the inner. With Carter, there's some character issues: Does he get inoperative with everybody? What's he like to deal with in the locker room? Those sorts of issues.

"I know it's early in the procedure, but I'm forewarning everyone out there — Carter's touching to be kind of a hot-button name when we talk throughout some of the intangible aspects of it.

"I believe, though, with Pete Carroll, sitting here at No. 2, who has a long history of taking guys that have quote-unquote questionable picture, and then developing them and having it work out, that invents a lot of sense to me. But that will be the big discussion. It's not about his talent, about his size or his explosive takeoff and finishing as a pass rusher. It's about the character, 'Do we want to bring that guy into the building?'"

Despite those copies McShay had Carter going to the Seattle Seahawks as the No.2 overall pick in his mock draft.

Carter was gleaming to defend his character during a Sports Illustrated interview onward of the Chick-fil-A Bowl:

"I'm a really good teammate. You can ask any of my other teammates, and they will tell you the same sketch. It doesn't matter who you are, if you're a walk-on, I feel like I'm always going to help you out."

To Carter's credit, McShay did not offer where his concerns originated. He had hoped to dispel the ticket at the NFL Combine this week, but instead, he is still back to Athens to face charges connected to a deadly crash.
